The state of the health system in general, and the hospital system in particular, is a burning issue in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. However the enthusiasm expressed by both doctors and patients for exploring the possibilities of improved health care in the border region through greater cross-border co-operation has fallen on deaf ears.

The latest study from the Centre for Cross Border Studies - Removing the Barriers: An Initial Report on the Potential for Cross-Border Co-operation in Hospital Services in Ireland - concludes that there is a clear case for joint hospital planning and rationalisation in the border region.
